Job Description
Supervises the overall operation of the Pharmacy and assures compliance with all State and Federal laws and agency regulations and standards (e.g. JCAHO, ADOH, etc.). Assures that proper standards are maintained in the performance of all pharmacy functions. Maintains good intra- and inter-depart-mental relationships. Participates with the Nursing, Medical and Administrative staff in the development and review of program goals and objectives for the pharmacy. Prepares the Pharmacy budget, administer the budget and account for variances. Prepares and/or annually reviews and revises the Policy and Procedure manual for Pharmacy including establishment of the Standards of Care. Maintains a Quality Improvement Program which complies with JCAHO standards, Arizona State Statutes and the SMH QI program. Develops and/or annually reviews and revises the job descriptions of personnel in the Pharmacy Department and performs an annual evaluation of job performance based on the job description of each employee under supervision. Maintains an orientation program for new employees in the pharmacy. Provides or arranges for appropriate staff development opportunities to include in- services and continuing education programs. Maintains cooperative communications with other NHF/SMH departments to coordinate services for better patient care. Coordinates the infection control activities of the department. Provides for inventory control of supplies and equipment assigned to the department. Prepares the department staffing schedule and reviews and approves biweekly time cards. Maintains and updates a system of records and reports that accurately reflects the activities of the department and submit periodic reports to the COO. Represents the department at appropriate NHF/SMH meetings and on appointed NHF/SMH committees. Knowledgeable of NHF/SMH policy and procedures and the Personnel Policy Manual and interpret them accurately to the department staff. Responsible for financial management of department. Supervises or performs medication preparation and paperwork. Maintains an IV additive program. Complies with and enforces all legal restrictions on the profession of pharmacy. Serves as Chairperson of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Assures that all pharmaceuticals and supplies are properly ordered according to contracts. Authorizes payment of bills for the department. Trains and supervises all pharmacy personnel. Assists Medical Staff with drug use evaluations. Maintains a library of pertinent pharmaceutical information. Ensures that the pharmacy computer has correct pricing updated and that billings are timely. Maintains relationship with Toyei Nursing Home (and other facilities) that contract for Pharmaceutical care. Registers as an Associate in Pharmacy Practice with the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy and serves as a preceptor for pharmacy students. Ensures that proper agents are on “crash carts” and that pharmacy personnel are versed in their use. Responds to “Code Calls”. Maintains a procedure for obtaining credit for unsalable pharmaceuticals or assure their destruction. Compiles and updates a formulary. Ascertain that drug usage is in accordance with formulary policies.
