CLINICAL PHARMACIST NEEDED Operations and Research in Medication Safety

$90-115,000/year

Very exciting opportunity for someone who has pharmacist background. Looking to fill 3 positions. This is a unique position for someone looking for a challenge or tired of the normal day-to-day clinical pharmacist duties. My client is an extremely prestigious healthcare organization located in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. They are involved with an extraordinary leading-edge clinical healthcare information technology application: my client has developed and deployed an automated surveillance system that interfaces with the Pharmacy and Laboratory Clinical systems. The surveillance system alerts the Pharmacists of adverse drug events utilizing pharmacy dispense information and laboratory results based upon a set of complex rules and algorithms. Just awesome application with "real world" results!

Basically, the day-to-day duties would be to evaluate and determine the severity and causality of these adverse drug events. The data is then used to make positive changes in patient care which in turn takes patient safety initiatives to a new level. Adverse drug events are just the beginning of the research and development potential in the realm of Clinical IT surveillance.

Primary Role: The employee will be responsible for assisting in the designing, implementing and operating systems and programs for studying the incidence and profile of adverse drug events for purposes of quality improvement and clinical research. The employee may also practice as a clinical pharmacist as opportunities for direct patient care may be considered as a component of clinical practice.

Essential tasks and responsibilities include: * Perform Quality Assurance assessment of current automated Adverse Drug Event (ADE) surveillance system; audit pharmacist assessment and documentation of events to ensure uniform quality of data capture * Assist in the design and testing of new automated rules for detecting adverse drug events, and in the evaluation and revision of current rules * Serve as liaison between pharmacy, companies information technology programmers, laboratory, medical records, and other parties who contribute data and resources to adverse drug events surveillance efforts * Investigate potential new sources of data for ADE detection through chart review, review of coding data, and other approaches; determine potential value of incorporation of such data sources into ADE surveillance; design rules and techniques for obtaining such data via automated mechanisms * Maintain expertise and currency in the field of medication safety: stay current with the literature; track online and literature publications and activities of the leading national quality improvement efforts in medication safety (e.g., ISMP, ASHP, IHI, etc.) * Establish detailed understanding of the technical aspects of pharmacy computer system data and coding sufficient to make operational decisions in the design and revision of decision support rules for the adverse drug events surveillance system * Maintain a liaison function with companies clinical pharmacists sufficient to assist them in the use of the ADE surveillance system; educate and update them in the optimal use of the system * Assist with analysis of aggregate data generated by ADE surveillance for purposes of quality improvement (targeting high-frequency and high severity incident types for process redesign, etc.) and research and publication

Education/Training: * Doctor of Pharmacy degree or BS Pharmacy degree * Minimum 2 years clinical experience as a pharmacist in an academic medical center environment

Skills: * Competence in Internet applications, basic computer skills / Microsoft Office suite * Qualitative and quantitative data analysis, including basic statistical methods * Clinical knowledge and competence in pharmacokinetics, therapeutics, medication safety * Competence in medical literature evaluation
