Job Description
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) one of the nation’s leading healthcare facilities is seeking a Clinical Pharmacist Specialist in our Emergency Treatment Center. UIHC is located in Iowa City, a University community offering many recreational and cultural activities and an exceptional school system.
The Department of Pharmaceutical Care has a staff of more than 100 pharmacists and 120 support personnel. They provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care to acute and ambulatory patients supported by a network of seven pharmacy satellites, a central pharmacy, IV Admixture clean room facility and three ambulatory pharmacies. Ambulatory drug distribution and inpatient drug distribution are highly automated with robotic technology, decentralized automated dispensing cabinets and bed-side medication bar code scanning. The department has active medication use evaluation and outcomes management programs, serves as a primary teaching site for the College of Pharmacy and has a large residency program.
The Emergency Treatment Center pharmacist, in close collaboration with emergency room physicians and nurses, will be responsible for helping to ensure appropriate use of medication in the emergency room. This role will include the monitoring the appropriate use of medications, dose and duration of therapy; recommending alternative regimens when appropriate; and providing ongoing education for emergency room staff. Opportunities exist for precepting pharmacy practice residents and/or PharmD students as well as pharmacy staff mentoring and development.
Applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree or a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Completion of an ASHP accredited pharmacy practice residency or two years experience in the specialized area (for example, emergency medicine or critical care) is necessary. Job-related experience with and/or commitment to diversity in the work environment is required. Eligibility for pharmacist licensure in Iowa is required.
