8-4:30 <P> The Pharmacy Technician Specialist routinely assists the pharmacist in the preparation, filling, and delivery of medications. They serve as a liaison to assist in the appropriate and timely delivery of information and pharmaceutical products to the customer. The successful candidate will have to demonstrate mastery of all job function of Technician I and II as documented in technician competencies for incumbent on file and observation. They must demonstrate proficiency with Automated Dispensing Cabinets, CII Safe, Pharmacy computer system patient fills, and compounding sterile and non-sterile pharmaceuticals during their probationary training period. They must also successfully demonstrate aseptic technique through validation for Intravenous (IV) and Chemotherapy admixture preparation. Failure to demonstrate proficiency within the stated period will result in reclassification to Pharmacy Technician II or termination, as appropriate.
Pharmacy Technician Specialist requires 2 years experience in the IV room. This role prepares complex IV admixtures, TPN and Chemotherapy admixture solutions using aseptic technique, whereas the Pharmacy Technician I & II do not.
The Pharmacy Technician Specialist must maintain their Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification at all times. Failure to maintain certification and licensure with the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.
Basic Education
High School Diploma or GED
Basic Eligibility
Be at least 18 years of age
Licensed as a Pharmacy Technician
PTCB Certification
Basic Experience
Two (2) yrs of hospital pharmacy Technician experience including 2 years of IV experience and completion of Pharmacy Technician II Proficiency Checklist (new hires complete checklist within 30 days)
Basic Field-of-Expertise (if applicable)
Knowledge of pharmacy and medical terminology with ability to read and interpret physician orders.
